Tap-That shows how safe tap water is in towns around the world and lets people rate how it tastes. It is made by Chris Kruger in South Africa. This page explains what information the app and website use, and why. We keep it to the minimum the app needs to work.
What we store
- A random ID for your phone or browser. When you first open Tap-That it creates an anonymous ID, so your taste ratings can be saved and changed later. It contains no name, email or phone details.
- Your taste ratings and tasting notes (for example "4 out of 5, slight chlorine"). Everyone can see the average rating and the tags for a place. Your name and email are never shown next to them.
- Your email address and password, only if you create an account. Passwords are stored encrypted by our database provider; we can't see them.
- Your starred places and private notes, only if you create an account. Only you can see these.
Your location
If you tap Near me, your phone shares its location with Tap-That so it can find the closest water systems. This happens on your device. Your location is not sent to us, not stored and not shared. You can turn location access off at any time in your phone's settings.
Services we use
- Supabase stores the water data, ratings, accounts, starred places and notes.
- Map tiles come from MapTiler and OpenStreetMap. To draw the map, your device asks them for the map squares on screen, so they see your IP address and the area you are viewing, as with any website.
- Netlify hosts the website.
We don't use advertising, we don't track you across other apps or websites, and we don't sell or rent anyone's information.
Information kept on your device
To work offline and load quickly, Tap-That saves a copy of the water data and your sign-in on your device. Deleting the app (or clearing the website's data in your browser) removes it.
Deleting your information
You can delete your account at any time in the app: open Account and tap Delete my account. This permanently deletes your account, taste ratings, starred places and notes. If you never made an account, deleting the app removes your anonymous ID from your phone; you can also email us to delete the ratings made from your phone.
Your rights
Under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), the EU and UK GDPR and similar laws, you can ask to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you. Email us and we'll respond within 30 days.
Children
Tap-That is a general travel and information app. It is not aimed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Water safety information
Ratings come from official government and regulator reports, summarised as simply as possible. They can be out of date, and conditions can change quickly. Always follow local boil-water notices and official advice.
